Born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota, Katie was inspired by a mother who was a research lab technician. Beginning her nursing career in Obstetrics 30 years ago, Katie learned the impact of genetics on pregnancy and babies. She expanded upon her love of science and found a true passion in the field of Genetic Nursing. A patient advocate at heart, Katie knew that many people did not understand the impact genetics can make on their lives, and from that knowledge, Med City Nurse was born.
As a Genetic Clinical Nurse, Katie would like to help people understand the new Genomic Era and how it can help the individual. Genetic Nurses are trained to identify risk, support the person or family with education, and refer to appropriate care providers. Some examples of this are:
Able to identify genetic “red flags”, Katie can provide support to families or individuals who need information in a clear, understandable way. Katie can act not only as a patient advocate, but as a support system.
Katie truly believes genetics are the missing piece of the puzzle in both prevention and treatment of health issues and that it can make a significant difference in people’s lives.
